For such a widespread celebration, Earth Day is relatively young. The holiday came into existence about 50 years ago and was only first celebrated on April 22nd,1970. This was a direct result of the efforts by Senator Gaylord Nelson, who proposed the idea at a conference in Seattle in 1969.

When Earth Day was first proposed, Nelson was unsure of how successful it would be. However, the first celebration exceeded his expectations beyond measure. After the initial conference in Seattle, the idea of “Earth Day,” completely took off.

News of the proposed holiday spread through telegrams, letters, and even the telephone. With an overwhelming amount of new supporters, the first Earth Day sparked a chain reaction that still motivates people to get involved today.

Since the 1970s, Earth Day has garnered some major success. Its currently the largest secular holiday celebrated worldwide and attracts over 1 billion participants. Certain areas around the world even celebrate Earth Day with their own unique festivities.

 

London celebrates Earth Day by inviting local bands to perform at The Hive Stadium. They also feature all day activities including environmental speakers, yoga, dance, and a vegan cafe. Tokyo even dedicates two whole days to support the cause.
